Won't get dressed

My 6 yr old granddaughter lives with me and has since before she was 2.  For the past year, getting dressed has been a major issue with her, and lately it's totally out of control.  She is a very well mannered child at home and school except for this issue.  I have tried letting her pick out her clothes at night, but in the morning nothing fits, it scratches, it hurts, etc.  We will spend over an hour trying on clothes and in order to get her to school on time, I will have to physically put clothes on her with her kicking, biting, hitting and screaming at the top of her lungs.  When we get to the school, some days she will have taken her clothes off in the back seat of the car and I will have to go back home and keep trying.  Today was the final straw as she was an hour late for school- trying on clothes for over 2 hours and she ended up in a total meltdown (as well as myself).  I know this is a power struggle, but I can't figure out this outrageous behavior.  PLEASE HELP!!!

My son would give me a hard time last year with getting dress for school. He made me so mad one morning that I throw my hands up and told him, you get dress or you will go to school in your pj's. Needless to say he went to school with his pj's on. I wrote a note to the teacher and sent his clothes to school with him. After that he got dressed every morning with out a problem. And come to find out I wasnt the first parent that had done this.good luck
