It might be better for you to post in the autism forum.
Can you give more information eg. age of child, behaviour problems etc.
As you are in the UK you can get information and parent to parent advice from www. nas.org.uk.
Unfortunately no child comes with an owners manual.  It would be really useful if they did!  But there are alot of things that can/should be done for a child on the autistic spectrum which will help them communicate and understand.  The nursery or school they go to should have experience and expertise in autism whether it is a mainstream school with extra places for special needs children, or whether it is an autism only school or unit.
There are many therapies out there.  Some have medical evidence that they show improvements.  Other ones are on the bizarre side, and have no evidence of making improvements.  So it all depends on what the mother intends to do, which you haven't posted.
As you are in the UK a child with autism should have a Statement of Educational Needs.  This should list all of the childs needs in section 2 and all of the things that will be provided to meet those needs (eg. hours and staffing arrangements and professionals input and therapies etc in section 3).  But for the local authority to agree to a Statement the parent has to prove that the child has complex needs.  You may prove this with reports from the local authority, or you may need to pay for private reports.
But the child will find it hard to improve on their own as communication and social interaction difficulties are part of the diagnosis, and it is through communication and social interaction that we learn.
