behaviors at 13

I have a 13 year old son that critisizes everyone and everything. He is a great kid otherwise. No behavior problems at school, good grades. He seems to be very insecure because he makes fun of everyone, even his best friend to his face. It seems that he doesn't know what else to say except negative comments. Do haev any suggestions about what could be going on?

i was going to say sounds like he's insecure.  have you sat down and talked w/ him about it?  perhaps he wants a little more encouragement and cheering coming in his direction.  im thinking a boost for his self confidence could come from him being involved in some type of extracurricular activity or hobby of his liking, something he could learn teamwork from and feel valuable.  
i also was thinking that if he just doesn't know that type of behavior is unacceptable, you might find some quick reading material and go over it together with him on how to win friends and keep them.  he needs to know it definitely wont come from making fun or criticizing others
