chewing clothes- age limit

I read the other posts = children in questioned all seem to be younger or have some psychoilogiocal trigger to behaviour - my son is nearly 11 and his habit of chewing sleeves is becoming very difficult and expensive = school uniforms etc ruined within weeks. He is an anxious child( eg too worried to go to scout camps etc ) but there is nothing obvious that triggered this= happy healthy well balanced family , 2 siblings who are fine. We really need to find a way to help him stop it now  , bribes / star charts arnt working and it is clearly a habit so punichments not really appropriate as he doesnt even realise he is doing it! any advice please before we go to the child psychologist!

I don't think your son's chewing is a habit but instead is a soothing mechanism.  You did state that he is an anxious child and I suspect he "chews" to deal with his stresses and fears.  I wonder if the solution would be to "lessen the anxiety" so that the chewing becomes less.  Also, he may need to find some other method of "self-soothing".  A child psychologist should be able to help your son figure out a method of coping with and managing his anxiety.  It appears what has been tried did not work.  All the best ...
