collic or dairy allergy

by goldc95, Jul 19, 2004 12:00AM
Hi we have a new born( Joey) she is 6 weeks old.Over the past feew weeks she has been  exstremly fussy, and irritable, to the point she is obviously in pain. She will cry so hard and for so long in pain at times she cant even eat. We have had several trips to the pediatritions office and one trip to the emergency room, when we discovered she had small droplets of blood in her stool. The first time we noticed the blood it was about the size of a Q-tip, the other times are hit and miss, but they are small pin size drops. My wife breast feeds Joey, and each doctor we have seen says, they believe the baby is having an alergic (allergic) reaction to my wifes eating of dairy products of any kind, thus causing the blood in the stool from possible swelling of the babys intestines. My wife has done all she can to cut out any and all dairy products with the exception of a few small slip ups! So I guess I should get to my question,  if it is an allergic reaction to dairy products, why would it only appear to happen in the evening time when Joey starts feeling this way? would that suggest it may be COLLIC ? and if so then that wouldnt explain the blood in the stool. Please give us a suggestion or some gudience

thanks very much.

This does not sound like colic which, as you probably know, is not related to health conditions (including digestive problems). A sensible course to continue to pursue is something in the broad area of gastrointestinal problem. Now, it is possible that an intestinal flareup associated with the dairy products might persist for a time, even with discontinuation of the products. In other words, an immediate cessation of the problem might not be expected to occur. This definitely has the appearance of a health-related cause, not colic.
