creating an alternative

I need help for a 5 year old who is violent. The violent behavior is noted at home as well. I need to come up with an alternative for this child as part of our standards in order to remove the child from the program. The child will go to kindergarten in the fall and the district will wait until the child falls behind 2 years academically before they address behavior. Are there schools or hospital programs that will take this child 8am to 4:30pm Monday - Friday in San Mateo County California?

This is not your normal preschool frustration and aggression.

Sandman, question.  What are you talking about that the school would want to wait until the child is 2 years behind??  If a child presents as violent or with behavioral issues, schools typically will act immediately to the best of my knowledge.  Am I wrong in that?

with academics being on target, it is sometimes difficult to get an IEP but the 504 plan comes into play for behavior issues and accomodations for such, right?

The schools might want to wait until the child is  two years behind - but you said academically.  That could happen the minute the child enters the program.  Any way, a parent can request in writing for assessment and the school must accommodate them.
Not sure what kind of a program you are in that you need an alternative?  But obviously you are looking at school and an  after school day care.  The public school might provide both, but I doubt that the after school part would be free.

One last comment, lol.  I do realize that some areas are very heavy in all day kindergarten------  so for next year, that may be something that the family doesn't have a choice in but a school day of 8 to 4:30 is still too long by about 2 hours based on the average school day for kids in the US.  good luck

By the way, that length of day is too long for an 'at risk' child.  This child would do best in a half day program and then at home with either a parent or a caregiver/babysitter.

I would allow the parents to address where the child goes to school and the public school system as well.By law, all public school systems must provide an education to children within their district.  By law.  And that includes intervention.  This child could be placed in early intervention now within the public school system but the parents should address this.   Perhaps they and the public school  can provide an intervention that you could not.  And I really believe that is false that they will let kids go for 2 years prior to intervention.  That would be unethical and not something I've ever seen or heard of.
