crying (tantrum) in gym class

crying (tantrum) in gym class

Hello. My daugher is just 7. She is very intelligent mentally but physically she cant do too many things, she is not very coordinated when it comes to doing things like dancing, excersises etc.

In gym class she gets extremely frustrated because she tries and tries and just cant do anythign that the other kids have absolutely no trouble doing. I work with her as much as I can when she asks me to but I must admit, I encourage her and praise her efforts but she just doesnt have it. This for me is ok, noone can be terrific in everything. To her though it is unacceptable.

So problem now is, when the gym teacher pulls out the jumprope for instance, she will try and try and just cant get it together, she will cry and yell. The teacher tells her it is unacceptable but it just gets worse. When they are playing a game with her classmates and she doesnt do well, she will yell and cry again. She gets teased, it makes it much worse.
Normally in her every day life, she does not do this. It is all her frustration of not being able to do some things with ease that gets annoying for her. I tell her she can do it, we practice but to no avail.

My problem is not that she is not able, my problem is that she is 7 and having tantrums at school in front of everyone and it makes me sad that I know she is being teased because of it, yet she doesnt stop.

Today I dont know if I did the right thing. I told her that she is not allowed to yell and cry when she cant do something. Its the new rule. If she does scream and yell and I find out about it there will be consequences. I have an inkling I did a terrible thing but I am hoping it may work. Its been going on a long time since kindergarden but as kids grow, they get cruel and now she is being hurt by the teasing.

Do you have any other suggestions of what things I can tell her without making her feel bad about herself and yet get her to have fun instead of hating gym class and playing ''stupid games'' as she says.

Thanks in advance! I am sorry if this is long.

nikogal,  I think you did a GREAT thing telling her to stop screaming and yelling!  I don't know where,  as parents,  we've decided we can't tell our kids to stop making such a fuss.  That's perfect.

You're not tellng her she has to excel in P.E.,  she probably won't ever,  but telling her to be a good sport and quit screaming is perfect.

Thank you for your replies. Actually she is going to start swimming classes in a few weeks.
I am trying to teach her to laugh at herself. I always did since she was little because she always got frustrated easily when she couldnt manage stairs etc.. Its funny she would be like this because we always laugh around here when we are having trouble with something. Its funny too that her body looks like a gymnast's I dont know how it is possible!
In any case today she has gym class, I am hoping that my terror trip works and doesnt make her more anxious.
