defiant 2 year old

I have a grand daughter  that is 2 1/2. I am concerned because she doesn't talk very much she makes sounds but very few words. She is also incredibly defiant of any reprimand. She has an extreme temper, when she gets angry or frustrated she will pull her hair out or she will bite herself. she refuses to watch any educational programming however she loves to watch musicals or listen to an Ipod. She does her best to sing along with the music. I have never seen such a defiant angry child before. Is there anything I can do?

It is very frustrating for a child not to be able to communicate.  Check to see if the school district offers any in-home speech therapy.  It should not cost you anything as it is the public school district.  We had a speech therapist from the school come into our home to help our 2 year old.  I noticed she wasn't able to communicate and talk as she should for her age.  My husband was embarrassed because he was a teacher in Germany and taught the English language.  Finally, I convinced my husband that she needed a speech therapist.  The speech therapist did things we did not think about, such as blowing bubbles.  She said that she had not developed muscles to be able to speak clearly and blowing bubbles was great for developing those muscles.  The anger will subside once she is able to communicate.
