effect of zoloft on child behaviour

by aaabbbccc, May 22, 2003 12:00AM
My 11 year old daughter receives 100 mg. of zoloft daily for anxiety/OCD. It has helped a lot. She has social problems at school and says she is hyper and the kids don't like it. She is not at all "hyper" at home. What she is experiencing could be due to her anxiety problems but could zoloft cause this kind of a side effect? Her Dr. considered increasing the dose for anxiety but I wonder if the cure could be part of the problem?

Zoloft and other medications in the same class can have an 'activating' effect with some people, but if that were the case you would see it at home as well as at school. So this 'hyper' appearance is likely not a reaction to the medication. It is very likely a manifestation of the anxiety she experiences in the social situation, and a reasonable intervention (in addition to therapy, preferaby group therapy) would be to try an increase in dose.
