febrile seizures

by kris, Jan 03, 2001 12:00AM
I have a five year old son who was diagnosed with reoccuring febrile seizures when he was 3 yrs old. As he had more seizures they increased in length of time. He saw a pediatric neurologist and was placed on phenobarbital to stop the seizures. Since he has been on the medicine, it has been 2yrs, he has not had anymore seizures, however, every six months he has an EEG and it always comes back showing seizure activity yet he has never had a seizure since. My question is this: We were told that about the age of five children out grow febrile seizures, yet my son is still showing seizure activity going on in his brain, could he be prone to epilepsy and if so will he out grow it or will he have to take medicine for the rest of his life?

Dear Kris,

I'm not a pediatric neurologist and am not qualified to address your question. However, you can post it on MedHelp's Neurology Forum.
