My 5 yr old grandson poops in his pants some of  the time.  He  generally goes to the bathroom  to do it, but then we discover he has gone in his pants already even when he doesn't have diarhea (diarrhea).  He tries to clean himself up but it seems  he gets off the potty and then tries to clean what is still attached to his bottom. so he calls me or his mother to clean him up. He usually has "skids" on his underwear.   She puts him in "pull-ups"  to make it easier for cleaning when he is here, but wears his underwear to preschool. If he has had any problems at school I haven't heard of it..
