Chewing items as clothing and paper and even one's fingernails is a behaviour to those suffering from anxiety. If anxiety is the issue, the way to "break this habit" would be to "lessen the anxiety" - this is the difficult part. Of course, there are other reasons a child might chew on items; however, anxiety usually is the culprit. Hope this helps ...
