how can i judge my child's right attention span.

hi, i have a seven year old daughter. She is very keen in reading everything which is being told to her. But i find that if a story  is told to her and then asked questions on it she is unable to answer them. Or if asked to repeat the story she would miss out several things in that narration. She is also unable to do  mental maths efficiently. The teacher feels that she does not pay attention in the class. Gets disctracted easily. Whereas her observation in her area of interest is very good. How do i judge her? Please help.

I would suggest taking her to your family physician or pediatrician would be better who could refer her to a child psychologist who would then in turn have you and the teacher fill out forms and questions about your daughters to determine whether or not she has something like ADD/ADHD. It may not be these specific things but there are many other learning issues that resemble each other. It could very well be a auditory issue but you won't know until a doctor and or specialist gets involved. This could take a while to determine but once it is is determined then things can be put into place to help your daughter with a better learning experience. The sooner that she gets the help the better. Talk to her teacher about getting the school to look at her for any issues with learning. If there are any, then the school psychologist will be able to perform any tests needed.

That is a hard question.  In regards to stacking up 7 year olds and what is typical, the teacher is actually a pretty good judge as she does that every day.  I am wondering if your child has any auditory processing issues.  Please google this and see what you think.  Placing her in the front of the room and near the teacher/speaker may be helpful.  If she has some auditory processing issues, they can be addressed to help the situation.  good luck
