in response to grandmother issue with granddaughter

I am very disappointed with the DR's response to your question regarding your granddaughter's seemingly rude behavior towards you.  Many grandparents live far away and yes, although a relationship will not be as well established as if you lived close, it does not justify her behavior towards you.  Children seem to be getting ruder as the years pass and this to me is very unfortunate.  As a mother I would be appalled at that type of behavior and would not allow my daughter to treat her grandmother this way.  I have three children and feel it is my job to teach them that we are to treat all people, especially our family and even more importantly our elders, with respect.  Yes it is true that you should not put high expectations on your relationship with your granddaughter because relationships do require time to be spent, however, I would venture to guess that if her parents and you for that matter explained to her that it is extremely important to be kind and respectful to all people, I believe she could and would change her behavior.  If she is treating her grandmother this way she will treat others with the same disrespect when it suits her and this is tragic and sad.  Nowadays we are so focused on what is "best for me"and "how it makes me feel", etc that we forget about morals and the golden rule, "treat others the way you want to be treated".  Is it any wonder to anyone why our society is literally a very scary place to live????  I am sorry for you as a grandma, I hope you someday can have the special relationship you are seeking.  Keep loving her.

Whilst I agree with you that this child needs to be told she cannot behave or speak to anyone never mind he r Granma , the Doctor is correct and it is because they dont see each other very often the child thinks its okay to behave like this, and no one is correcting her Granma should sit her down and ask her why she is so rude to her, maybe they could get some rapport going ,ask WHY,  and Mom of Daughter step up and do some ticking off.
