CHILD BEHAVIOR COMMUNITY
lying

lying

My daugher is 13 almost 14 and lying has been an issue since I can remember. I have tried everything I know to stop this behavior including taking away punishment for the truth. Even this does not seem to help. She lies regarding school, friends, the past, the future, you name it. My husband and I love her very much and other than lying, she is a very well behaved child. I am really at wits end. Help

People - both adults and children - lie for one of two reasons:

1. To avoid getting punished in some way for something that happened , or
2. Due to low self esteem ( telling a lie is an avoidance mechanism to prevent the liar from feeling the pain of low self esteem.)

Chronic liars - who are not doing anything else wrong (which you say is your daughter) tend to have self esteem issues.
I would suggest you seek counseling for your daughter so that you as a family can uncover what her issues are and develop a plan for her and you to deal with them.
