medications for self regulation for sensory intregation?

by kitcat012, Dec 19, 2002 12:00AM
My son is 4 years old and I am having a complete neuro eval done on him at a local hospital.  The school he attends can't figure out if he just has sensory issues or if he also has behavioral issues, so I decided to get the evaluation to help with his IEP.  I had a pre-eval appt. today and spoke to a psychologist who asked if I ever considered medications, I asked her if there were medications for sensory intregation and she told me that neurologists like to use the term self-regulation.  She also told me that sensory intregation children usually have behavioral issues as well.    I'm very confused?? Are there medications for sensory intregation or does my son has ADHD??

No, there are not medications to address sensory integration issues per se. However, it is not unusual for children with sensory integration problems to display other conditions as well. ADHD is common in children who display SID. You are doing the sensible thing by proceeding with the evaluations. It may well be that the assessments can pinpoint the sensory integration problems and also pinpoint any other conditions which might warrant treatment. If ADHD or any mood disorder, for example, are diagnosed, medications are available, though we generally try to steer clear of medicine for such young children unless it is clearly, very clearly, in their best interest.
