my 3 yr old squeezes or picks on his face whe not ocupied

my son picks on his face (it used to be around his finger nails before) when he has nothing to do ie. in the car or at night when Im reading a book.  I noticed some anxiety when he does it.  he gets a few tiny pimples from it that go away he next day.  once or twice he has picked on a cut that he created.  If I give him 'a lot' of attention and affection he relaxes and stops. by 'a lot' I mean if I hug him through out the day 'a lot' and treat him like a little baby then he starts saying gugu gaga and he is happy.  why?  I have 2 toddlers and I dont have enough free time to do that, what can i do?

Hi he is only 3 he is still really a baby as such himself i wouldn't worry too much, and it could also be his younger siblings, he wants more love like you give to his siblings. Just keep telling him not to do it and keep his nails short as my daughter did this  and ended up with imeptigo twice on her face. Hope it is just a phase, my daughter was 4 when she had impetigo she is now 6 and now she has moved from face to arms. Sharon
