my 5 yr old refuses to have bowel movement

This just started about a month ago and he's been potty trained since 2.5. Now he screams for days holding back the urge and refuses to go to the potty. We have to force him to go sit on the potty and he gets hysterical, literally even if we don't make him go. Iv'e tried every bribe and plea I know.  He'll run around in circles screaming to try to stop it. I'm giving him m.o.m. to ensure he is not constipated but I don't know what to do. He says he's afraid it will hurt. PLEASE HELP!

He has experienced painful bowel movements and is now reacting to those experiences. Be sure to confer with your son's doctor about this, and the doctor will likely prescribe stool softener or some other remedy. It is possible your son will need to undergo a bowel clean out, depending on the degree of accumulated stool. In any case, be sure to have him seen.
