my 8yr old son worrys alot

my son is 9 this year and 4 the last 2/3yrs has become a very anxious boy who worrys alot.it was at its worse last year when he became terrified he would vomit.he hardly ate and lost weight would burst in2 tears in school and get hysterical because he thought he would b sick.a few occasions the teacher left him clutching a bowl untill he calmed down.after alot of hard work he saw a phycologist who worked with him abit 2 decided the best form of therapy but then we heard no more from him.my son had food poisioning recently and threw up alot which i think made him realise there was nothing 2 fear.however since then his anxiety is worse in general.he goes 2bed at 7.30 but will constantly ask when im going 2 sleep or he will get up several times with excuses even saying hes worried he cant sleep,he eventualy relaxs when i go 2 bed and i know hes not getting enough sleep.he panics if hes out late in the evening especially if it starts getting dark he continualy asks 2go home or asks the time.a recent trip 2 the cinema with his dad was a disaster as he was so excited 2go but kept asking when they were leaving and he wouldnt eat or drink, the plan had been 4 them 2get a burger after but he wouldnt go he just wanted 2cum home.another occasion on a recent holiday with my parents he became nearly hysterical with his nan because it was late and he wanted 2get back,he actually told her she had 2 calm him down.she told me about it l8r on and said it was very upsetting 2c him like it.he sees fear in everything and it stops him enjoying his childhood.hes a very lovely boy who has lots of friends and he is very bright.he does have auditory memory problems which he is being helped at school with.im at my wits end and my heart breaks for him,i hate that i dont know what 2do with him and im forever in tears over it.i really need sum help because gps just tell me he will grow out of it but i know my son and i know its gettin worse!

Your posting indicates that your son suffers from GAD - generalized anxiety disorder.  If you google the phrase "GAD and children" or "anxiety and children" or similar words/phrases, you should be able to find reams of information on this topic.

The first step is always to visit your family doctor.  Anxiety is an emotional, mental and physical disorder so a psychologist is not usually the best person to contact re this issue.  If your family doctor is unable to help you, then ask for a referral to a medical specialist with experience in anxiety disorders.  Anxiety is usually an inherited disorder and not one which stems from life experiences (although life experiences can exacerbate the issue).  Anxiety is very common and highly treatable.  And, if anxiety is the issue, I assure you that your son will not outgrow it nor will it go away.  But, he can learn how  to manage his "fears" and live a "normal" life.  I wish you the best ....
