my child is always mean and i can't figure out why?

my son use to be really whiney now he just has a bad attatude and is acting snoty. he always smacks my friends or there kids for no reason,he won't listen and says bad things but i am not sure were there coming from.he seems to have alot of anger all the time.he says his real dad calls him stupied,a loser,and also said he was a little ******,and he does'nt love him. it hurts me that this would happen. his dad use to hit me and spit on me and was a total jerk but that was before he was born,he has never been to any of his birthday partys or anything.he is a crapy dad but won't sign over his rights.i'm worried about my son.his stepfather was deployed to iraq for 15 months and just returned home so it's been hard. we love him so much but it's hard to deal. i don't know what to do anymore.he can be a sweet kid but most of the time he is just mean!
