not talking

not talking

My 26-month-old son is not talking. He says only a few words but mostly points to the things that he wants.  My mother and I try to tell him to say what it is that he wants but will not say the words.  The only things that he does say are momma, up, No, baba, bird.  My grandmother thinks that it could be a sign of autism.  I think that he is very smart but I am so worried that she may be right.  Who should I take him to see.  I don't know if I should ask the family doctor, and E.N.T. or an speech pathologist.  I have some medical experience and do generally know about raising children but I am very worried about him.

Always, your first contact should be your son's pediatrician or family doctor.  This is the person who knows your family/son best.  If a referral is required to a more specialized person, then your doctor should be able to suggest the correct person.

By the way, our nephew was diagnosed with PDD-NOS which is a high-functioning form of autism.  He did not say one word until past three years of age and when he began to speak, he "echo" talked (repeated whatever was said).  He was not able to answer any questions until past his fifth birthday.  I wish you the best ....

Hi.  Many kids have a delay in speech and end up talking just fine.  It is great news that he is gesturing for things that he wants and is communicating with you.  I take it he can also understand what you say to do if you tell him to pick something up for example.

I'd see your pediatrician and ask for a consult with a speech pathologist.  There are different reasons why children are late talkers.  A speech pathologist will be able to direct you to what that might be for your son.  How are your son's other motor skills, by the way?

good luck.   Remember, when things are tackled early with kids----------  it is amazing what they can do.
