potty training

by irishtwinsmama, Apr 16, 2008 08:07PM
i have a three yr old daughter we have been potty training off and on for a year,  she has only urinated twice this whole time.  for the last three days we have been doing the "bare bottom method"  except for naps and bedtime so first thing in the am i take her diaper off before she even gets a chance to think about using it, and she cries because she wants her diaper then i put her in a t shirt with no underware or diaper   she actually holds in all urine until nap time when i put a diaper on her. and when she does wet or soil herself she just looks at me and says mommy im done!!! anyways she doesnt want to sit on potty chair and when she does she sits there for an hour and does nothing. we have tried books toys songs rewards. and i am so sick of buying diapers. i dont know what to do from here, i even put the potty chairs in our living room so she had easier access to them.

It sounds to me like she is just not ready to do this yet. Its not terribly unusual for some children not be ready until they are 4. Sometimes the terrible twos can show up into the 3s- with stubborness and a a desire to take control of life-- and potty training is an area where children can really get control over their parents:)

Anyway, my suggestion would be to stop the whole thing for about 2 months-- maybe three-- and then try again with books, rewards, songs-- always on the positive-- those few months may let her mature past this particular stage where she will be willing to try again.

My nephew was just like this-- would not train until he was 4 -- my sister in law tried and tried and he just never made the type of progress she needed. So she stopped -- and tried again when he was a little bit over 4 -- and then things went just perfectly from there. He just needed some more time.

My son was a but over three when we first started -- he was at the right age for him, we did not try an earlier, and it took him about 4 days. When its right, its right.
