problems with sleeping

my son is 22 months old. from the time he was born till he was 4 months old, he does not sleep all night. on an average he wakes up 4 times screaming. there are better nights when he gets up only twice, but then there are nights that he tryes to walk around and is tottally non responsive. he used to have spells of sheking but that has stoped(it has not happened in about 7 months). i am 22 years old and i have ADD.but have not been medicated for 11 years.my choice. i think he may be ADHD. all the signs are there, but need a nother opinion his doctor keeps telling me that he will grow out of all his behavors and hasn't. he still hits and pushes, he has been doing that for almost 9 months.is there anything you know that can help??
                                         thank you elizabeth

he goes to bed at 9:30 i have tried no naps for 2 months and he still wakes up cryingi have tried giving him a nap, nothing seems to work i do not run to him when he cries after about an hour he will fall back to sleep. when i did go get him i could just pick him up and hold him for a little bit and he would go back to sleep,i do not know what else to do.and he eats dinner than will have a snack then bath and we read a book then i give him his milk and he goes to his bed and goes to right to sleep. i do not know what i am doing wrong i am very good with him.

My pediatrician wouldn't even discuss the possibility of ADHD with me until my son was 7, so I don't know if I'd go there with a child who isn't even 2 yet.

I think your doctor is right--he will likely grow out of it, but it may take longer than you would like.  My son didn't sleep through the night until he was 5.  I ended up making a "cozy spot" by our bed and told him he could come into our room if he awakened in the night and he could sleep the rest of the night there, but only if he didn't wake us.  That worked well.  The only time he woke us was when he had a bad dream or a night terror (he only had a few of those, fortunately) and of course I would still let him sleep in our room.  He came into our room for quite a while and he went through times when he started and ended the night there and that's when he rested the best.  Actually, we all rested the best those nights.

He sleeps through the night now at 11 years old and has been doing so in his own bed since he was 5, but he does grind his teeth.  He's a pretty intense kid overall, but still has not been diagnosed with ADHD.
