I think that I would talk to the people at his early intervention preschool.  They see lots of kids with varying degrees of issues and maybe they can help you put a name to what is going on.  Does he receive speech therapy and occupational therapy?  If you are already at your preschool for early intervention------------- what services does he receive?

Hi there toni.  Well, I see you live in the United States.  This is good news as you have some options for having him evaluated.

Autism is a developmental delay and kids will fall on a spectrum.  One of the key factors to all on the autism spectrum is the ability to socialize.  Does your son make eye contact?  Does he interact with other kids or adults?  Does he pretend play by himself?  These are important questions.

There are other things to add into the mix as to issues your son may be having.  He may have motor planning issues (apraxia---- speech/ dyspraxia---  motor control) and this could be due to sensory integration disorder (which my son has).  It is different than autism but often present WITH autism.  They may have some social skill issues but it is slightly different than an autistic child.

I agree that the wetting in and of itself isn't a sign of autism-----  he is only 4.  And the desire to sleep with parents is pretty universal.  However, how does your child self soothe.  That means how does he calm himself when upset.  How does he relax or is he able to in general?  A child with sensory issues or other things would have trouble settling down to sleep whether it was with mom and dad or not.  They're nervous system is in overdrive.

So, living in the US means that you can request as is the right of all US citizens to have your son evaluated for early intervention.  He is now 4, so your local public school is who you need to contact.  Ask for a full evaluation---------  occupational therapist, speech and psychological.  If your son is having trouble in preschool, this is really important. That would mean that he may have an issue that the early intervention program can help with.  If the issues are mainly at home, then that would be more of an issue of his enviroment and I would try some changes in parenting style.  So, I would talk to his doctor and then ask for a formal evaluation.  If the school system in your area does feel he has a disorder or a developmental delay or even just an issue with speech (which can be very frustrating to a little guy and cause behavior issues)------- then they will enroll him into their early intervention preschool.  There he will receive services that he requires--------- speech, psych, OT, PT, etc.  You may then want to supplement with private therapy and do a lot of research as to what you can do at home to help him progress but you'll know where to start.

If he is in special needs preschool, certainly you've met with some professionals.  What do they say?

Then I think they need to do their tests you are a concerned parent needing answers and only the doctor you see can do that ..Repetitive speaking is something small children do it is not always considered abnormal like wise the wetting at 4 they sometime regress especially if potty trained early ..most children want to sleep with Mom and Dad whats nicer than that to feel secure .Has he any siblings?

I think the first place to start would be the Doctor to get his opinion ,he will be able to tell you if Autism is a possibility. He sounds as if he has some challenges .Good Luck
