seperation and teachers

by cazza1, Apr 21, 2008 03:09PM
I have a three yr old daughter with minor special needs. Mainly asso with language though her understanding is fine. The problem is she is now at nursery school and i am having to pick her up all the time because her teachers say she is very distressed. I have taken her to a Psycologist who says they just have to perservere with her but i now hate leaving her because i know they can't handle it. This is a special needs school and she was placed there for this anxiety and other factors. I do not now what i can do to help her settle it has been eight months since she started.

Wow-- a special needs school and they are asking you to pick her up? Either they are not really equipped to deal with special needs children or she is really, really distressed.

There are many children, with and without special needs, for which nursery school is just not a good idea at age 3. I can't imagine what a nightmare my son would have been if he was in nursery school at 3-- he would not have lasted 2 hours -- seriously:)

Anyway, my point is-- do you HAVE to send her to nursery school? Is it being suggested for her development? If not, maybe you should withdraw her, and then try again later when she's 4 or even 5.  My son did not attend pre-K -- at all. He went to K without any formal "socialization." He is getting along pretty well -- makes top grades, honors classes,  and is making friends-- and he has ADHD and is not medicated. I don't think that his failure to attend nursery school made any difference in his long term progress.
