sighns of autism or other developmentel problems

our little girl is now 2yrs she was recently evaluated for a speech delay and was fould to have seriose delays in both her language and speech.  she has no intrest in books and will not even try to repeat a word back to us if she points to picture and ask whats that, when we tell her she makes no attempt to repeate it, we know her hearing is ok.  she has been using the same sentences for 7-8months(whats that, thank you, here you go,i know, she also says no,momy, sparky, baby) and that is about all she says she can not identify her bosy parts, or tell us if she is hungry, thursty, nor does she call people by name.  she is easialy excited and does respond wellt o computers and music but still doesnt try to repeat what she hears except for some rythems. also she started to have sizures at 26mo and since then her vocabulary has shpowed almost no growth is that a common problem for kids with siezures to experience language delays or is she possibly showing the first sighns of autism because she is unable to follow even the most basic directions such as stay, come here, or even respond to her name half of the time

Dear Joanna,

I doubt that you are witnessing the early signs of autism, though it is possible that a form of Pervasive Developmental Disorder is what your daughter is displaying. A more likely prospect is Landau-Kleffner Syndrome, a type of childhood epilepsy characterized by the very symptoms you are describing, including particularly the language disorder (this is a major symptom in LKS).

In any case, it would be wise for your daughter's pediatrician, speech pathologist and pediatric neurologist to confer and discuss their findings. My sense is that your daughter is manifesting chiefly a neurological condition.
