toilet training

my 3 year old started to go by himself qiute well he learnt to go straight on the toilet rather then use a potty as i found it was easier and more incentive for him as his brother and father used it and he wanted to be like them but now although he has hardly any accidents at night he wees and poos himself anywhere all day i have considered putting him back in nappys but it was such a long time ago i started training him it seems a huge step backwards i have even tried star charts and rewards but nothing seems to work.his due to start nursery in a few months but i dont think he'll be ready.
