weight gain [ overweight ]

My son is 5 1/2 and his weight is 78 lbs height :49 inches ,I have told his doctor of my cotch what I feed him . He sweat`s I know this may seem normal cosidering how much he weigh`s but he is solid .I do watch the food and I don`t give him junk food .He is constatly thirsty .He drink`s about a gallon of water a day .I asked his doctor if he could do a test to see if he has diabeaties, or check his thyroid .He told me he felt the test would be a waist , because diabetics lose weight. A friend of mine checked his blood and it registerd:89: she said that was low he had ate 30-40 min.befor plus he had drank 8 oz of orange juice. His behavior has now is bewildering . He alway`s want`s to be on the go . If I take him with me Anywhere,I have to constatly tell him to stop the behavior and then I feel like a bad mother , when we get out of the store I am exhausted . He will listen to his Dad.PLEASE HELP! What is the calories he should have? What is the normal weight? Thank YOU.

I would just like to say I have a very beautiful daughter and she is approximatly 48 inches and 72 lbs,  she is always ont he go,  whether it be riding her bike or scooter, jumping on the trampoline or swimming she doesnt stop.  she drinks water all day long,  she wants it for breakfast lunch and dinner,  she doent like sweets or really any junk food or meats,  she eats lots of veggies and fruits.  I worry about her weigh all the time but some children are just ment to be bigger than others,  if you know you are doing right by your child then just give him the confidence he needs and go from there,

Dear Chris,

The median ht/wt for a boy your son's age would be approx. 44 inches and 43 pounds. That, in itself, is not crucial, because most children are by definition above or below the median, so the notion of 'normal' is misleading. The important point is that your son is displaying some problematic symptoms. I think you should respectfully insist on additional evaluation and follow-up. If your son's pediatrician will not do this, you should ask for a second opinion. You have reason to be concerned, so use your energy to obtain additional help.
