The substitutes for dairy products are soymilk, rice milk, almond milk, soy cheese, soy yogurt, soy ice cream, and rice ice cream. Soy products (which has no dairy, all plant base) and he will be getting all the nutrients he would have gotten from milk. Make milkshakes out of soy milk, soy yogurt, (can use soy ice cream) and frozen fruit which will give him extra calories, protein, vitamins and minerals. Have him eat extra foods to increase protein and calories – meat substitute/combo, fruits, vegetables, and grains. Hoped this helped you. Suggest you read up on vegetarian and combinations of starches / vegetables and beans / nuts (no whole nuts at this age) for protein, calcium, and other nutrients to help your son. Good sources of information are the American Dietetic Association website, www.eatright.org and Vegetarian Resource Group website, www.vrg.org
