Baby Insomnia

Our six week old seems to be hungry all day, and he doesn't want to sleep.  Today for example, he has been up since 6am and it is now 4pm.  He wull usually fall asleep at night for a few hours, the best he has done is 7 hrs but 5-6 is typical.  Then he will be sleep for an hour at a time or so eating an ounce of milk in between.  Come day though, and he simply will not sleep.  How long can we let him cry in his crib if he's fed and clean.  We let him cry for half hour today and finally went and got him.  He was well fed, and after we got him out of his crib, back to eating.  He eats breast milk, sometimes at night we'll put some formula in, thinking it will thicken it up a little to prolong his sleep.

His weight is on the 50th percentile for his age which is good. At 6 weeks old he can feed 8-10 breast feedings (2-4oz per feed) per day (including the night) every 3-4 hours. Have you pumped to check your breast milk production? If you are not producing enough breast milk, then suggest supplement it with formula at that feeding so he is getting enough and you are able to get him on a schedule of feedings of 3-4 hours between feeds.
