are we feeding her enough?

My daughter, Mikayla, born on 3/31/2009.

Family history:
Diabetes (My mom’s mom and my cousin)
Lactose intolerant (My mom’s sister and Mikayla’s cousin on her dad’s side)
Colic (Mikayla’s cousin on her dad’s side)
A liver that has heals very slowly (my dad and his dad) (other family members unknown)

She was 10 weeks old when Mikayla spit up was what looked to be very watery with white spots about two hours after feeding her. (we fed her 5oz every 3 hours) So we took her to the new doctor. She said to give her 1 ml of “AXID 15mg/ml SOL BRAINTREE” every 12 hours for acid reflux and to reduce to feeding her 4oz every 4 hours. About half way through the bottle we spilled it all and we are not able to get more until the month is up.

With the medicine:
Mikayla was constipated and the spit up looked more like the milk we had just fed her.

Without medicine:
Mikayla is not constipated and the spit up looks more like milk that has been in her tummy for the last 4 hours.

Both with and without:
She is eating 4oz every 4 hours, she wouldn’t burp at all until she was done with the bottle, had lots of gas because of it, still spitting up the same amount, and every day gets more upset that she is not get more than what we feed her. Sometimes she will get so upset about not getting more that she will start crying 1 hour before feeding time and cry her self to sleep in 30 minutes.

What can I do? What should I do? I am not sure I can take the crying much longer. I am thinking about going back to giving Mikayla how much she wants to eat when she wants to eat.

Here are a few suggestions to help with acid reflux. The feeding position is important and should be almost a sitting up position when feeding her. Burp her well. Never lay her down on her back right after eating or ½ hour to 1 hour after feeding because the acid from the stomach goes into the esophagus and causes pain. Raise the head of her crib to a 45-degree angle too so she are not flat on her back. Feeding her 5-6 times day does help. Feeding that way keeps the stomach acid constant which helps the reflux, she grows, and weight increases at a steady pace. If she wants formula before the 4 hours, give it to her because she should not have an empty stomach with acid reflux. Recommend increasing her feeding amount to 5-6ozs due to the loss when she is spitting up. Suggest maybe changing her formula and/or medication so she is not constipated, less acid reflux and she will eat more. Discuss this with your MD. Hoped this helped you.

From your question it seems your daughter is hungry and if she is, then she would be in pain so suggesting increase feeding her a few additional ounces. If the present medication is not working then suggesting maybe having your MD try another type of medication to help her so she is able to consume the proper amounts of food for her age to grow and gain weight.

I had been feeding her about 5oz every 3 hours because that is what mikayla wanted to eat. The Dr. said to reduce it to 4oz every 4 hours.

As for the sitting up postion and burping, I was doing that before. but with the reduced amount she wouldn't burp for anyone until she had finish the bottle.

Also she wasn't constipated unless she is taking the "AXID" medication.

So are you recommending a different medication plus what I had been feeding her?
