healthy weight gain

by brwnydgrl, Jul 11, 2008 05:08PM
My daughter just turned 8 years old and is 50" tall and weighs 42 lbs.  She has only gained 4 lbs since she was 4 years old.  She has always been thin but since she has been on Adderrall for ADHD for the past 2 years, she has become extremely thin and I am concerned about her weight.  We have switched her to another medication so her appetite will not be suppressed.  What healthy foods can I feed her to help her gain weight?  Thanks!

From the measurements you stated, your daughter's height is in the 50th percentile and weight is just below 5th percentile for her age. It is recommended for her weight / age to eat appropriately 1000 calories per day which consists of 1cup fruit (fresh, frozen, canned), 1cup vegetables (fresh, frozen, canned), 4ozs grains (breads, cereal, cooked rice, cooked pasta), 3oz meat / fish or beans, 2cups dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese- 2oz), 3 teaspoon oils (margarine, salad dressing, mayonnaise). This food above should be spread out throughout the day into 3 meals and 2 snacks. This will help her gain weight and grow for her age.
