unsure how to feed my son because he is afraid of food

Hi. I need advice. My son only wants certain foods..crackers, fruit, yogurt. and I know these are healthy foods, but they are not providing him with his nutritional needs, as he is not gaining weight..just staying the same weight for a year now. I have consulted my sons pediatrician on this and she said just give him a nutritous meal/snack..if he doesnt eat, do not offer another choice and no juice or milk til he eats..just water. okay, I have done this and it is not working. It seems he just fills up on water and is content not to eat, when I finally offer a food he likes, he binges. He will eat an unbelievable portion size for a 2 year old, so than of course he is not hungry for a long time again and it is a cycle I do not know how to break. please help!

His weight is between 90-75th percentile and his height is just under the 50th percentile for his age. He is at a good weight and height for his age. It is frustrating when your child will only eat a small range of food. The most important aspect is to relax at meals and not to force him to eat or only give him water. Let him eat what he wants no matter how limited. If he is drinking milk, suggest making milkshakes (milk and ice cream blended) or yogurt smoothies (yogurt, fruit, and ice cream blended) in place of milk for additional calories. Suggest a daily chewable children's multi-vitamin if his eating pattern continues. Slowly introduce new foods, and if he does not want it, do not make a fuss over it. Let it go and try in a few weeks.

To: doctor
thank you for your advice, I will try introducing more new foods in a few weeks and take your advice on the smoothies and milkshakes for the calories.
