G-tube feedings

G-tube feedings

Hi,

My son is currently taking a mixture of soy formula and lipids through his mickey g tube.  I want to add blended/pureed? food into his diet.  Looking for ideas, experiences, etc..  Mike takes no food by mouth yet....working on that but it is very slow.

My 8 year old daughter Sophie also receives feedings through her g-tube.  We've tried baby food, but we cannot get her to swallow it.  The only things she seems to want in her mouth are her hands.

We sometimes dip her finger in squishy foods (apple sauce, baby food, frosting), and she will end up eating it.  Other times she just wipes it on my clothes!  My sweet baby girl!

Good luck!

My son received GT feedings also. Since he often refused oral foods, then was restricted from them, I did feed pureed through the tube as well.

First get some "bolus" extension tubes from your medical supply company or from Ballard directly.
Also get some 60cc cath tip syringes.
You will also need a hand blender.
Then a tall mixing cup/bowl type thing.
I also got 1 quart rubbermaid containers.
Second stage baby foods work best because they are pretty well blended already.
Add your sons formula with whatever amount of puree you choose to make it a thick creamed soup consistency.
Attach the bolus tube to the mic-key...then the syringe to the tube (minus the pluger-keep it handy though, you will need it)....fill the syringe almost to the top with food mixture...using the plunger, push the mixture in slowly. When one syringe has been fed, clamp off the tube, remove the syringe and start over. Careful not to go too fast or too slow...kind of imagine yourself or your child eating a bite and deliver about the same amount in the same time it would take to chew/swallow.

Hope that helps!!!!
