IEP's and the Sub Psychologist

IEP's and the Sub Psychologist

I just want to ask this question, and see what kind of replies I get, because my mom and I thought this was a little weird.

My little sister, Shannon, has CDD. She's such a sweetie and well-adjusted. Until you get her really pissed off, or when she's really excited, you can't tell that she's "not normal". For this reason, my mom doesn't want to medicate her.

She did her IEP and everything went fine. But then the psychologist---not even the normal one, a sub---told my mom to consider medication for Shannon. This psychologist said "It might be easier for when she's in middle school."

Do you think this is a good idea? My mom doesn't really like to medicate, and I don't know what kind of advice to give...

I wouldn't medicate a child unless it was absolutely necessary. And by necessary I mean antibiotics or something else relating to life or death. Medications that alter the brain are often recalled after reports of really scary side effects. I'm not willing to let my child be a guinea pig.

I've watched my DH try several different types of antidepressants with little success. The side affects are just horrible on some of them. We've had the most success with fish oil, diet and exercise. My DD also has developmental delays and I will not ever medicate her.

I share the same views. And my mom was pretty mad. People have been telling us since Shan was in preschool, "You should really medicate her, it would help," The only "medicine" she's on right now is Prevacid.

I just don't see why everyone is so fast to medicate. They want these kids all doped up---what's that gonna do? She'll be a slug and not have the mental capacity of a pebble? Yeah...no thanks, I'd rather have my sister.
