Welcome to the Special Needs Community!<img src='/RoR/images/blank.png' class='icon_img_ww push_pin_icon'>

Welcome to everyone - new and existing members!  If you are new here, please feel free to introduce yourself and tell us a bit about why you are here.  Please post any questions, concerns, or issues that you have relating to or about Children with Special Needs.

If you do not wish to post openly on this forum, (If I can help answer a question that you might have) please do not hesitate to send myself or others a message or note directly.  Often times new members visit here because they have a family member, relative or friend who has special needs.  Sometimes just learning about having a child with special needs can be an overwhelming prospect.  This discovery in itself can be an uncomfortable or stressful/trying time.  But, more often parents, family and friends already on this journey know first hand that the journey is and can be a special and rewarding one.   If this is your situation, remember many of us have been in your exact situation, and know better than anyone what you are facing.  More importantly, we have discovered that while we learn that there are many rewards, there are many others who we struggle to teach.  I hope that here in this forum, we can help each other, teach each other and support each other through both the difficult and exemplary times.  Please feel free to post questions, concerns, problems and even more importantly, "brags".  We all need a place to be able to share ideas and thoughts without fears, and I hope that this is the place you will find you can.

Many of the members here are full of knowledge and have personal experiences with questions that you may have.  Personal experiences are sometimes the best answers to many questions.  Please keep in mind, that while we may have extensive knowledge in many areas, members should always seek professional medical advice from their own physician, as it pertains to medical conditions or concerns.

Again, welcome and please enjoy this forum.

Sincerely,
Sandi (Dragon1973)

Welcome!  It sounds like you will do a fantastic job as community leader!

I have a son with a developmental delay called sensory integration disorder.  It has been an interesting journey and taught me many things as parents of a special child know.

Good luck to you!

Hello April,

I just sent you an answer to your post.  Yes, if referring to Down sydnrome - 95% of the time, it is a random occurrence that is statistically changed by age.   (the older you are, the more likely the chance of Ds occurring).  There is a form of Down sydnrome that is passed on genetically, called Translocation Down syndrome.  This only occurs 2-5% of the time of all occurrences.  So, women do have to realize that it is not something that is more prone to happen because of genetic history as opposed to random chance.  In my post to your question, I have mentioned that if you are looking for more specific information, (of which I have extensive amounts of) you can message me directly at any time.  I am available at any time, but I do have several messages a day.  So, I encourage you to message me directly in that way I can get to you faster.

In addition to anything I have mentioned, please keep in mind, that while I or others may have extensive knowledge in many areas, you should always seek professional medical advice from your own physician, as it pertains to medical conditions or concerns.

Good luck, and if you have any other questions that I can help you with, please feel free to message me directly.

Sincerely,

Hello! My name is kellie! I have an almost 11 year old son with severe ADHD (so bad it shows up on the autism spectrum), ODD and tourettes. I guess I am here more to offer support and answer questions as I have become an "expert" in dealing with the day to day. I have known since before he was born he had "issues" and have worked with many specialists to over come them! I prefer to call them issues as opposed to disabilities because he is not disabled... He can still do what ever he dreams of, he just needs extra guidance!
