Allergic To Bubble Gum?

by Jewel25, May 01, 2008 01:29PM
Has anyone ever heard of being allergic to bubble gum, or I guess something found in bubblegum?

I have a 4 year old, about 2 months ago she attended a birthday party and came home with a mouth full of bubble gum (Bubble Tape) and a bag filled with candy. No big deal, she woke up the next morning with a big red splotch on her left cheek. At first I thought she had been in a bad position over night causing the red mark. Throughout the day the splotch got brighter red. I called my sister in law, to find out what all she had eaten during the party. Nothing that she had eaten at the party was new. So at this point I knew she had bubble gum (Which she had never had prior) and a bag of candy, which I didn't know for sure what had already been eaten from the bag. I also thought it was possible that it was a small bug bite on  her cheek since the party took place outside.

Fast forward to yesterday.... while at the gas station I bought my daughter a pack of "Hubba Bubba" gum. Now today the red splotch is back.  Hmmmm... coincidence?

Here PCP is closed today which is why I ask for advice here.

How would the allergy be determined? Is this even a big deal? Does she even need to see the pcp or should I just stop giving her gum. I am assuming that there is something in the gum that could be causing the reaction. If so then it's best to find out what it is. Right?

Sorry this dragged on, I am lost when it comes to allergies!

Is she allergic to anything at all or is this the first reaction.  I went online to find the ingredients just to be certain there was no latex inside .. but as of today I believe it is really not in gum anymore .. way back it was in Chiclets as the "gum" !

I'm allergic to bubble gum.  Not chewing gum, just bubble-gum-flavored bubble gum.  My worst reaction is to the ones sold by the piece, like big pink nuggets.

I had not had any bubble gum in fourteen years and had some this afternoon, stupidly.  Yup.  I am allergic to bubble gum.

It is an anaphylactic allergy.  My mouth and face are still swollen, though I took some Benadryl as soon as my gums started itching and throbbing.

I'm sure you haven't given her any more, but for gods' sakes, don't give her gum again!  :)  Hope she's okay.

I am allergic to Extra gum.  I don't get hives or blotches but my throat closes up and I gasp for breath.  I've never bothered to look at the ingredients to see what is in it though.  When the gum first came out as trial packs I was able to eat it but when it came out mainstream I've never had a good reaction to it.

Hi,
Everyone in my family is allergic to ALL kinds of gums (including all the gums that are used in foods like icecream, Sunny Delight, Sobe drinks).  Anything.
I feel real sorry for your little one as I love to chew gum too.
We break out in painful cystic acne (everyone in a different area).
Make sure you read the ingredients on ALL products as 95% of anything that tastes good is loaded with gum.

My son is allergic to bubble gum and bubble gum flavoring. We discovered this when he was 5 and I gave him flavored tylenol for kids. Periodically he will have some bubble gum and the rash and hives continue to come back, 15 years now. So this week he had Rita's Swedish Fish flavored Italian Ice...and you guessed it. There were the same hives, itching, swelling etc that appeared the first time 15 years ago. The one place we always make sure to mention the allergy is at the dentist where they use flavored tooth polishing stuff.

WOW ..  sorry to hear this.  My daughter had an anphylaxis to Peach Gummy Bears and stridor within 30 secs yet she ate it many times before (same brand) .. it was cross processed on line with nuts and also contained nat'l fruit flavors and may have had plum in it .. we'll never know. She is RAST + with reaction to plums, latex, nuts
