One winter later a new mouse appeared. It went the way of the first one - and I blocked another point of entry which was under the step at the front door. All quiet since then. Both times a mouse was present, we had those allergic reactions and never again since then.
Turns out later that pretty much all neighbors have a mouse problem, more or less. And when my son visits friends in the area, in some instances he sneezes about 100 times and has to leave. There is one home where the mouse problem seems to be fully out of control, their girl told us she sees at least seven of those critters per day (!) - and guess what: she has severe asthma, aside from nut allergies.
Since I saw how my son and I were allergy-free again in our own home after all that mouse-proofing, I was sure it was all linked to rodent dander. I googled it and noticed there is a lot of research now that points to how many cases of asthma are actually linked to the presence of mice.
Sorry this got so long. Maybe it helps someone, thought it was interesting.
