chronic cough

by SRILEY85, Feb 18, 2009 06:40PM
my 5 year old daughter has had a chronic cough,or what seems like what i would call a half cough for about two months now. it continues all day until she goes to bed at night. then when she goes to sleep she doesn't cough?
we just went yesterday for allergy tests and she had a strong reaction to cats. so we are going to have to get rid of our cat no question when it comes to my childs health, even though we love the cat, our daughter comes first. also
listening to her cough every couple minutes all day long is like someone scratching there nails on a chalk board. so my question is does any of this sound familiar to anyone, where there child has a dry half cough that is constant all day long? if so did you have any luck remedying it? we have been to regular doctor, ent & allergist. so far all i have gotten is get rid of the cat and wipe my whole  house down, even the walls. which i am working on doing, but in the mean time she has no relief and neither do my nerves!! HELP IF YOU HAVE ANY MIRACLE DRUG ADVICE IN THE MEAN TIME. ALSO HAS ANYONE GONE THROUGH THIS AND GOTTEN RID OF THERE ANIMAL AND THE ALLERGIES DID DISAPPEAR, WAS IT THE ANSWER FOR YOU? I HOPE SO FOR ME OR I DON'T KNOW WHAT NEXT, MAYBE MOVE OUT OF OUR HOUSE??

My Son is 3 1/2 and has similar symptoms.  With have tried everything and he's still coughing, even as I write.  I have found no allergy or asthma meds have helped.  We had him tested for allergy and he doesn't appear to have any, yet them have him on allergy meds.  I'm assuming this is because they don't know what else to do.  They say he will grow out of it, but I'm not willing to wait it out.

Please let me know if you find anything and I will do the same.
This is the info I found.................

son has chronic cough, post-nasal drip

My 5-year-old son has had a life of respiratory problems.  It started with constant ear infections and RSV infection as infant .  He has had bronchial -pneumonia and pneumonia, and gets continuous colds and bronchitis , and is sick much more often than is well.  The pediatrician thought he might have underlying allergies and/or asthma and prescribed zyrtec and singulair.  He does require albuterol during episodes of illness to treat wheezing.  I don't believe the medicine is working, as he still continues to get sick - much more so than any of my other children.  Do you have any suggestions for me?  Should I seek opinion of allegist, ENT, or what other specialist?  Should I just "wait" and hope he outgrows his difficulties.

It would be wise to have your son evaluated by a pediatric pulmonologist for some type of chronic, possibly congenital, pulmonary disease, such as cystic fibrosis
(CF).  He should also be evaluated for an immunodeficiency state by an allergist-immunologist.

No, you should not wait for him to "outgrow his difficulties."
