keeps on coughing...

My son has been dealing with seasonal allergies.  However, it seems it isn't just one time of the year he is suffering.   It lingers for months with what feels like no relief in sight..  He has had a tickle with a cough for what feels like months.  It was loose and now is drier.  I have given him Zyrtec off and on for a few weeks but hate to medicate.  What else can be done to STOP this disturbing cough?

Have you tried Sudafed type of product to help dry up the drip if the Dr says okay to try?

I know how frustrating it can be to be so dependant on drugs, prescribed or OTC, to control allergies and, in our case, asthma...

We have all but eliminated the heavy use of drug-ladened meds (on rare occasion, still use albuterol) with an all natural, organic salt pipe inhaler. My daughter has seasonal (indoor and outdoor ->year round) allergies too. She is on several prescription meds from the allergist - which really do make the difference between breathing and not.  The coughing is often due to nasal drainage.
Nasal rinsing - neti pot or bottle - is another Great non drug procedure to deal with allergy or cold symptoms! I tell people "we wash our hands to clean them, we need to wash our sinuses too! "(to remove allergens or dirt)  You can make the saline solution 4 oz Warm water to 1/8 tsp salt. Always make fresh solution, use as often as needed.  We do twice a day if any congestion, and up to hourly if you cant breathe.
Also my daughter had an X ray that showed the allergist and an ENT that her adenoids (adenoids) were too large - they were removed this summer and poof little congestion and colds go away normally!
