my 13 mo grandson finished hi amoxicillin. 2 days later he woke with a few hives. as the day progressed he got more. his parents took him to the e.r. where he got even worse. after a 2 hr wait they were fluffed off & told give some benadryl, none was offered there. they were told it was a rash from his runny nose & it would get worse.said it was no big deal & sent them home feeling uneasy.  the parents started him on benadryl as directed. by 9 a.m. the next his tiny body was swelling & a good 80% was covered with raised, hot welts. his face looked like he had been beaten. we took him to a different e.r. they immediately gave more benadryl & a script for steroid. we covered him with caladryl. the swelling is gone & the heat & welts are gone but he is purply/pink where the hives were. the skin didn't break or weap but it looks burn scars almost. how long will that last & is there something else they should do? we teared up just looking at him.

If he is okay for now, you want to get him in to see a pediatrician. I am sorry you were treated that way, well, that he was treated that way by the ER. You should (or mom/dad) call the hospital that has the ER and let a higher up know what had happened. The skin should return to normal, however, because of how bad it got and the time that had elapsed, it's no guarantee it will return to normal quickly.

I am in no way making an excuse for the ER, but they are made more for circumstances unlike these. I am not saying you shouldn't have taken him to the ER in any way. I am just saying that a regular pediatrician will be able to take care of this issue more properly.

Please take care and update us on what is going on. I am really glad that he was given help, even if it was not as fast as it should have been.

thank you. he will see hhi pediatrician in the morning. they would not hesitate to go back to the second e.r. if need be but he seems more like himsef=lf. it is disturbing to think what might have happened if they would have felt comfortable with the "sit tight & wait" advice they were given. thank  you again for your responce.

No problem, he should get the care he needs when he goes in the morning, he should be okay, and even if there are some minor scars after this, there is natural stuff you can use to get rid of the scars and it's all safe for him.
