lumbosacral transitional vertebrae

My twelve year old son had unexplained hematuria last year for several months, now ten months later started complaining about hip and stomach pain and x-rays showed lumbosacral transitional vertebrae, mild disc herniation, narrowing, and scoliosis.  Went to orthopedic for the MRI, Bone Scan and has now referred him to see neurosurgeon. He complains of funny extreme itching in his feet when standing for long periods but it is relieved when lying down. Question is why was he referred to a neurosurgeon? And is the funny extreme itching related to the LTV? And would the hematuria that he had ten months ago have anything to do with what is going on now? Sue

A small percentage of the population shows these bone anomalies, and when found, generally receive a consult with a neurosurgeon to make sure nerve root compression is not present.

If nerve root compression is causing the itching in your son's feet, the neurosurgeon may want to take a closer look to see if surgery is needed. Generally, I find that neurosurgeons are the most "judicious" when it comes to determining the need for surgery... And that's a good thing, especially in this case!

As for the possible connection to the hematuria, I'm not certain.

I hope this information benefits you.

Warm wishes,
