Confused and Scared!

by staciel69, Jun 03, 2008 11:49PM
Hello,

I went to the doctor last week for what I knew had to be a bacterial infection (I've had them before and knew the symptoms).  It was almost time for my yearly pap smear and my doctor asked me if I wanted her to go ahead and do that while at the office.  I had her complete the exam.  My doctor confirmed to me that I did indeed have a bacterial infection and prescribed medication to me.  I received a call at work telling me that the test for Chlamydia came back positive.  Imagine my horror! I asked her how could this be. I have been with my husband for 14 years and it is a blissful happy marriage.  She suggested my husband get tested and encouraged me to make sure he showed me his results or talked to the doctor.  My husband and I were scared out of our mind and he continually stated he had never cheated on me and would ever jeopordize our family. His test came back negative!  I have been 100% faithful to my husband and if his test came back negative, how in the world would I have gotten it?  I plan to be retested before I start the medication.

Is there a chance that the bacterial infection infection I have is confusing the test that gave me the Chlamydia result?

I don't know that your other infection could have caused this (did you find out what that is, by the way?) but false positives do happen.  Its not common, but it does.

Are you taking meds for the other infection?  If you have started them, your re-test for chlamydia might not be accurate.

Thank you for  your respose auntiejessi,

My doctor just told me that it was a small bacterial infection called Bacterial Vaginosis and I am in my 3rd day of taking the medication.  I have not yet started taking the medication for the Chlamydia yet as I wanted to get retested before I started.

Since you have started taking meds for bv, your chlamydia test might not be accurate.  If you want to test again to see if you have chlamydia, wait 2 weeks from your last dose of the meds for bv, and then test.
