Diagnosed with PID, do I have chamlydia?

by holleyowen, Nov 04, 2009 11:28AM
hi, about a month ago I was admitted to hospital with severe abdominal pain and vomiting. They put me on an IV drip and then sent me home, saying I had severe gastroentiritus. Since then I have been nauseous, had cramps and general feeling that my stomach wasn't quite right. I also had a lot of irregular bleeding, but I thought that was due to me having missed 2 days of the contraceptive pill while being in hospital.
Then about a week ago I had the same abdominal pain, really painful in my lower abdomen and going through to my back. It also reached up to the top of my abdomen aswell but was mainly in the area above my knickers, but no vomiting this time. I was sent back into hospital and the doctors did blood tests, an ultrasound, urine tests and I had swabs taken for STI's such as Chlamydia etc and they generally asked a lot of questions about any irregular bleeding, burning when urinating etc. They ruled out urine infection, appendicitus and gall stones.
Again, because I had missed more days of the contraceptive pill I then started to have a very heavy period and generally felt very nauseous and had a lack of appetite. The doctors told me I had Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and put me on Ofloxacin and Metronidazole.
I am just concerned that I developed this through an STI and that it has done some damage to my reproductive organs. I have been with my boyfriend for 3 years but just before that he slept with someone else. I dont think hes been unfaithful since but is it possible that I had chlamydia and it developed into pid? Or could it be down to something else. and will i now have problems conceiving in the future?
help!

The most common cause of PID is chlamydia.  But it can be caused by other infections as well.  Unfortunately, there is no way to tell if your fertility has been affected without fertility testing.  And being as though it is extremely expensive and time consuming, it is recommended you actually try getting pregnant first and if it is not happening, then get fertility testing.
