STD in China?

I recently had a series of sexual encounters (over 3 day period) with a local Chinese woman and we did not use a condom.  About 3 days after the first time we had sex, I began to notice a very slight pain at the tip of my penis.  3 days after that (6 days after first time) I noticed it throughout my urethra.  The pain is not too bad, but it is very suspicious.

I decided to go to the hospital, where I asked them to give me a thorough examination.  The doctor did a visual examination, then ordered a blood test for HIV and a urine test for something else (I don't know exactly what the urine test was all about, but it only took them 10 minutes to do it - I think they just put the urine in a machine).

I was negative for HIV, though I know I should be retested in a few months.  The doctor prescribed some Chinese medicine called 四季草颗粒, which I mix with water and take 3 times daily.  Because I did not trust their urine test, and in China it's easy to get prescription drugs, I decided to self medicate.  I have been taking Azithromycin for the past several days (1g on the first day, 250 mg for 4 days after that).

How long should the infection take to clear up?  I know that I should go back in after about a week to get tested, but I don't know if they do Chlamydia and Gonorrhea tests in China, or how to ask for one - I was actually quite insistent that they test me, but the doctor said without visible symptoms, their tests wouldn't find anything (I even did a cotton swab motion to give him the idea).

I guess I just need some advice about what I should be doing (aside from wearing a condom in the first place).

Your medication would cover Chlamydia just fine. I would be really suspicious that you may have gonorrhea. Zithromax could treat this, but there is a large percentage of gonorrhea isolates resistent to Zithromax. A good NAAT test even without symptoms is a good screen. Pcr tests are available for Chlamydia and gonorrhea. Unfortunately Chinese medicine may not be up to date with western medicine. Good luck.

Indeed, the symptoms continue, but now they are more in-line with Gonorrhea (stomach pains, testicular pains).  How is Cefixime 400 mg one dose for Asian strains?

I went to a hospital specializing in STIs and tested positive for a type 2 Gonorrhea.  According to the doctor, this strain affects the testicles and causes sterility if left untreated (testicular pain has worsened in the past couple of days).  He gave me Gatifloxacin Mesilate, Azithromycin, and Levofloxacin (though he was unclear about dosage).

He also said that if it's not cleared up in the next 3 or 4 days, I should come back in for several rounds of IV treatment.

You should try to see a foreign doctor if there is one in your location.  Or travel to a city that has one.  Often, Chinese doctors wait for your urging to initiate more testing and the language barrier often prevents the thorough discussion of symptoms.

There aren't legal consequences for getting tested (and/or showing up positive) as a foreigner in China?
