STD testing true or false>

by sasha999, Jun 09, 2008 11:59AM
Let me start off that I have been with my bf for 3 1/2yrs, and I recently went to the GYN and had a well women check up. Well my test results came back positive for Chlamydia. This was an absolute shock to me seeing how in 2005 three yrs ago my test came back negative. So I had my bf tested as well and his dr. said that his test came back negative for ALL STD's. We have been having unprotected sex since April of 2005 which was before my check up in 2005 and he is the only one I've been with for these past yrs. Now my question is how is this possible?

First of all don`t panic. I have posted before about the Chlamydia tests available. It would take you a long time to read back through those threads, I am sure. So once again..I will repost this information. It depends on the tests you had for chlamydia. If it was a rapid elisa test then there are a small percentage that test positive FALSLY. If I were you return to your Doctor and ask for a culture for Chlamydia. That sould sovle the mystery. Take care.

Just to add to Dallas's post -

If you have taken the meds already, then your follow up test won't be accurate.  If you haven't taken the meds, then you can re-test.

If you decide to take the meds, and treat as if you do have it, your bf should also take the meds, just to be sure.

Sorry to say this but I think your boyfriend is a liar and never even went to the doctor.  You had to get chlamydia from someone and if you weren't cheating then he was.  People test positive for chlamydia because they have it.

We don't know her situation, her man, or anything.  False positives are not common, but they do happen, and she knows her man, we don't.

I actually had the same problem. I have been told that just like HPV many women can have STDs and not know about them. Same with men. I was told that most likely it is showing up now because they lurked their evil heads out. Honestly it is best to get tested and even retested if you feel the need, if gone untreated most can cause more damage. I was diagnosed with HPV and even did a colposcomy to make sure it was not cancer, I was lucky, but I was not able to find which partner I got it from, not because I slept around but because two of them were tested and negative, come to find out, most of the HPV tests for men are negative even if they have it. I am now having the same issue with my husband, and Chlamydia. I tested negative in January, he came home a week later from two months serving overseas, then now that I am pregnant and tested again they found it. I was told by a nurse that sometimes if you do not specifically ask for the STD tests when getting a annual exam they will omit things. That was probably what happened to me in Jan. Most people will jump all over the "your man cheated" defense, but its not the case always. I am the only one in our relationship with this STD so far, second test pending, and he blamed me out of pure frustration and confusion. Speak with a professional, they will understand and may be able to help. My OB nurse/doctor has been more help to me than any regular nurse too. My husband only did the urine test, so our nurse said he should go to another doctor and have the swab test, we shall see, but I feel I am in the same boat as you. Very confused, and hurt by people assuming the worst. Thats the thing with STDs they are sneaky and confusing. I wish you the best

p.s. even if he cheated and isn't telling you the test should be positive, this is why we are confused in our situation. Maybe have him re-test to just be sure about the "Cheating" theory

There is no test for men and HPV.  My guess is they went to their docs, asked to be tested for stds, and then were told "everything is fine."  They couldn't have been tested for HPV, though.

The one thing I will agree with Auntiejessi about is that there is no test for men...for HPV.  I have it and asked my obgyn and he is the one who told me that they do not test men for hpv.  As for the Chlamydia test, someone had to give it to someone.  I doubt very much that it's a false positive.  It is what it is so take care of it.

Trying to find answers. My wife tested negative for chlamydia on Apr 13th. On Apr 22nd she got her tubes tied. Eight days later she started having a lot of discharge. She went to the doctor and got retested, now they are saying she is positive for chlamydia. I got tested and I am negative how could this be? I had a negative test in Oct. of last year and she was tested in January this year because we were having a baby and that test was negative. I know there is no foul play going on but how is it possible that she now has chlamydia?
