false negative for chlamydia

hi please help. about 3weeks ago i went to the doctor with terrible pains they did some test n a week later i get a call to say i have chlamydia i was shocked of corse n distraught, ive been monotomnous for 11years n i trust my partner whole heartly though he thinks theres no other explanation other that ive cheated which is tearing me apart ive been to the nurse to try n get some answers she told me i had a swab test in 2008(as i had a coil fitted) which i remembe doing the swab myself as the nurse that did asked me at the time would i like to do it myself to just go behind the curtain n she give me a kind of cotton wool stick n to put it down below, is there anyway i could have done this wrong because i beleive ive had this chlamydia from the moment me n my partner have meet, could they have miss diagnosed, also in 2004 i had a prem baby at 28weeks im starting to think that chlamydia played a part in that. i did go on to have 3more children 1born at 37weeks the other 2 full term 40weeks1day 40weeks3days. Ive now been told that im now suffering from PID which im going to hospital to see how much damage has been done n the doctor said i may have to have my fallopian tubes removed n will i ever get better from PID ive read that i will have bouts of sevre pain for the rest of my life. please help.

Hi   /

One can be a carrier of chlamydia with no symptoms, and this is rare in people; usally symptoms appear between 1 to 3 weeks after exposure around or so.

Your "TERRIBLE" pains for a woman, are consistant with PID, and it is possible your chlamydia test in 2008 might have missed it (that you got a false negative).

Chlamydia tests should be taken 7 days after last possible exposure to meet window period and to avoid false negatives.   Also chlamydia test is not 100% acuarate (to anyone else reading this, it is recommend to : test twice, the second time  3 to 4weeks after your exposure and treatment).

I am not well versed on PID, and your other questions on damage and pain, should would be better answered from women who would know or from your doctor herself.
We also have other forums on here that address women's health issues like yours.

hi, my gf is the OP... and up until now i have been accusing her of infidelity. Plenty I have read though suggests that there is a possibility she's telling the truth. I had no suspicions prior to the diagnosis and have been completely faithful myself.

Your post has added to my belief that there must be a mistake somewhere, the odds are against it but those odds pay off some times, our case must be one of those times.

Thank you for your reassuring post.

If the swab test she  "collected herself" was an ELISA test, then there is a 5 to 7 % false positive rate with this test. A better follow up would be to collect a first voided urine test and have the NAAT Chlamydia test.  Remember that Chlamydia only accounts for about 20 % of all cases of PID. Take care.

also to add to dallas... a false positive is more likely then a false Negative

Just wanted to make sure were are all on the same understanding here;

She got a NEGATIVE test in 2008 from  the swab she "collected herself".
and
got a POSITIVE recently 3 weeks ago.

Was your recent test a Urine test (NAAT Chlamydia test) or blood test for chlamydia?

This is the OP's boyfriend again...

yes she had a coil fitted in 2008 and the nurse asked her to do the swab test herself for the STI test. She got a negative and has now tested positive just 3 weeks ago.

You must understand that I have been with her for 11 years and we have 4 children, if there is a chance she is telling the truth i have to go with it.

Am I being an idiot?

We can't say if someone cheated or not. This is going to have to be something you and her talk about.

tried talking and she denies everything. I'm really stressed out about this. Even if guilty she would never admit it.... relying on that tiny bit of doubt in my mind.

if a friend came to me with this problem i'd tell him the evidence suggests to me she's cheated and to do the exact opposite of what it appears i'm about to do.

I can't help thinking that all this internet searching she did was just an attempt to implant the tiniest doubt in my mind. It worked... a few days in and i did the searching for her, found the reason she was looking for. the million to one shot she needs. I work from home, so the PC is my domain, she's shown no interest in this thread since writing it. It was me that looked for the responses.

having read countless other threads like this one though, alongside scientific data i've got a pretty good idea of all the usual answers. I run a forum myself and a social networking community so i understand how you guys will repeat yourselves over and over again in different threads. It can get a little tedious.

So, thanks for listening and taking the time to respond... i think this is something i just have to figure out for myself.

Steff were you ever treated for chlamydia after your gfs diagnosis? If not then go get tested. Also there is a chance she could have had a false positive.. they are more likely then a false neg.

hi, ive been with my partner for 12yrs!! n we have a strong relationship, had the dreaded chlamydia & i know for FACT that neither of us have cheated because we both now where each other are. i got the diagnosis in 2010 had the coil fitted in 2008 which i had to be tested and i was fine. i became aware of discharge around two weeks after the coil was fitted, went to my GP & was told this was normal not to worry! then in 2010 i had very bad pain it was terrible i mean it was very painful, then was told i had chlamydia it was the most horrifying time in my life. now all i hear is oh u or he must have cheated but i know n he knows in them 2yrs where each other were i had just had my 4th child in 2008 & the coil seemed like the best option, but i believe (n its the only way i could have got this ) it was passed on to me when i had the coil fitted because i was fine before then i still have the coil but if i could turn back time i would never have had it.im dreading the day when i have to be messed with at the GPS when they have to take it out etc, the orgin of chlamydia? are these scientist 100% its only passed through sexual contact how can they be sure of anything us humans are very complex i believe they like to think they have all the answers. im considering taking a lie detector test(which my fella would take too) though im going to find out how much they cost it has put a strange feeling on our relationship .
