Total cholesterol
I keep reading that total cholesterol should be less than 200.  This doesn't make sense to me since HDLs also contribute to total cholesterol, and elevated HDL is supposed to be good.

My total cholesterol is trending up (went from 177 to 189) in one year, but my HDLs went from 51 to 58, so my Chol/HDL ratio went down from 3.47 to 3.25.   My LDL went up from 110 to 112.

Is this considered a good trend or a bad trend?

You are correct in your thinking and why most doctors are looking at your ratios. Here are the numbers and breakdowns;
