Getting my dog to take Azodyl

I have a very hard time getting my dog to take her Azodyl. She used to love pill pockets, so meds weren't a problem. Now, she won't go near a pill pocket. I've tried wrapping it in cheese, peanut butter, other treats, but no luck. The vet said I could open the capsule and sprinkle it on something, but since she's not eating, that doesn't work either. I've had to actually shove it down her throat twice. I hate doing that - it makes me feel terrible. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

I realize cheese is not the best for a renal canine. so far I have gotten my sheltie to take med with goat cheese in the roll, not the crumbles.

As you know they are so fincky...one day this is good the next it isn't.

Hi. If your dog isn't eating, please try to get your vet to prescribe Mirtzapine, which will probably help after being given for a few days.

I'm going through the same thing. Our dog won't eat and we basically have to shove the pills down her thrown. It's terrible. Sorry you're going through this too.

My dog takes her Azodyl twice a day with cream cheese.  It works really well, as I form the cream cheese around the pill and it just slides right down.  She is really excited to get it and comes running when she hears the lid open from the container of cream cheese.  An added bonus is cream cheese is one of the lowest phosphorous cheeses you can use.  Hope this helps with your dog!

Hi. Azodyl is really only a supplement, so if she doesn't take it, don't fret too much. You can buy it as a paste which is slightly better and worth trying, mixing it in with some food and a little pure coconut oil or organic honey (just a teaspoon).

If she's not eating, that's more a worry. What stage is she at and what are her current blood levels? Is she on any anti-nausea medication?
