The lack of red blood cells is more likely to be due to non-regenerative anemia. Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone, produced in the kidneys. This hormone controls the production of red blood cells. EPO replacement therapy usually provides both rapid and long-term correction of this type of anemia when related to chronic kidney failure. EPO usually does resolve the condition, improves appetite and overall health. The treatment usually needs to include iron supplementation - and ongoing periodic repeated treatments may be required.
